What to expect

  • Five days of alfresco making in our serene, shaded courtyard. Morning and afternoon sessions (3 hours each) with options to explore hand-building, wheel-throwing, and surface decoration techniques, giving you time and space to experiment and build your skills.

  • Led by two experienced craftswomen passionate about sharing their knowledge and skills, this retreat is for everyone. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced potter, we will meet you where you are in your clay practice, and help you create pieces designed with intention.

With years of teaching experience behind us we will hold space for your creativity, as we explore a variety of making and firing techniques.

  • Clay is a complex, living material. To work with it well requires a broad understanding of how it behaves through making and firing. By exploring multiple techniques—hand-building, wheel-throwing, and glaze formulation—we give ourselves the best chance to unlock clay’s full potential. During the retreat you’ll experiment with each of these approaches and discover how they interact, learning to work with form and surface in harmony.

  • There will be one bisque firing mid-way through the retreat for smaller pieces,* followed by an alternative firing (raku and/or pit firing, depending on weather conditions).

There will also be an opportunity to learn the basics of glaze making, from formulation to firing.

*Any larger works which are not ready for firing during the retreat will be bisqued once dry and shipped to you (shipping costs not included).

  • We will balance our clay practice with time to enjoy the island. Hike to a local viewpoint, go for swim, chill at the beach, grab a cocktail by the water, read, rest. Or simply enjoy some independent clay time in our outdoor studio. This choice is yours.

The Mindful Potter is an independent, woman-owned, small business.

Small but mighty, I’m committed to doing everything I can to create sustainable and ethical practices in my pottery studio and beyond.

Because I believe in collective action (and responsibility), especially when it comes to climate action and social equity, I also believe that every choice I make in how I run my business, no matter how big or small, will make a difference.

My efforts are imperfect. But I’m always learning and working to find ways to reduce the human and ecological footprint of my creative practice on the planet.

Ethical. Sustainable. Unique.
