Clay Intensive - Multi-Day Pottery Wheel Course

from €445.00

Who is it for?

For those who want to dive deep into the world of the pottery wheel.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned thrower, these immersive, small group workshops (max. 2 people) will be tailored to your existing knowledge and skills to help you to meaningfully progress your practice to the next level.

How does it work?

The workshop is usually structured over 5 days.

Days 1 & 2: You will spend these first two days in the studio building your foundational skills at the pottery wheel. Starting wherever you are in your clay journey we will use these initial 12 hours focusing on your confidence and efficiency, setting you up for success as you progress.

Day 3:* This is your day off from the studio. This rest day away from the pottery wheel is as important as the time you will spend with your hands in clay. It gives your body and mind time to absorb all that has been gained and experienced in the previous days, and also gives you a chance to explore the vibrant city of Athens.

Day 4: We meet again on day 4 to start integrating all you learned so far, easing into our practice with an hour or so of consolidation of the techniques from the first two days of the workshop. We then spend the rest of the day focusing on evolving your practice in the direction you are most interested in.

Want to throw big? We will spend those hours gradually sizing up your clay to build your confidence centring and throwing large pieces. Prefer to focus on a particular form or technique? We will deep dive into the intricacies of that shape and work together to build your knowledge and confidence when making that form.

Day 5:** On our final day we will turn our attention to finishing your pieces. You will learn the fundamental techniques you need in order to trim the pieces you threw on the wheel, allowing you to lighten and refine your forms. If you’d like to, this is also when you will have a chance to learn how to make and attach handles and explore different surface decoration techniques involving either the removal (e.g. carving) or addition of clay.

Our final task together on Day 5 will be for you to decide whether you would like to keep any of the pieces you have made and, if so, leave me with instructions of how you would like them to be glazed. They will be sent on to you by courier as soon as they are ready (cost of shipping will be calculated at that time based on the actual weight and dimensions of the parcel).

So, what is included?

  • 24 hours (approx. 6 hours/day) of small group (2:1) tuition at the pottery wheel

  • Up to 30 kg of high quality stoneware clay

  • Use of studio glazes and firing of 2-6 pieces (depending on volume)

  • Lunch and refreshments each day
